The Violet Mage Recap

Princess Ophelia been plagued by nightmares for the past two months that show her trapped in a valley surrounded by fire. She hears screams in the distance but is alone except from the approach of a giant beast, which is finally revealed to be a massive wolf with red eyes that lunges to kill her. Disturbed by the recurring nightmare, Ophelia decides to consult with the court Mage, Gaius, to see if he can give some insight into the meaning behind the nightmares. But when she speaks with Gaius, he only circumvents her questions, leaving her suspicious and without answers.

Ophelia then participates in the Maraleon Fall tournament archery event, disguised and under a different name, where she competes against a very attractive, high-ranking nobleman, Elliot Marxley, who seems to find her presence at the tournament amusing. He immediately rubs Ophelia the wrong way and spends the rest of their round continuing to get under her skin.

Once the tournament ends, Ophelia’s older sister, Aria, announces the winners of the tournament, of which Elliot is second, and Ophelia is first. Ophelia’s identity is revealed, and with the reality of being bested and tricked all in one, Elliot’s temper gets the better of him, and he ends up publicly insulting the king and princesses.

That evening at the tournament's final ball Elliot and his father greet the royal family to apologize for Elliot’s behavior and express their desire to make amends. Elliot asks Ophelia for a dance, and she accepts. During the dance they both feel a draw and connection to the other, though both of them fight against it.

The next day Elliot and his father come to the castle in the hopes of making things right between their family and the royal family. The king suggests that, since Ophelia was the one who Elliot acted against, she should be the one to choose his punishment. Ophelia poses that she and Elliot engage in another shooting contest of their own, just the two of them. Suspicious, Elliot accepts and he, George, Ophelia, and Nell all head to the wood near the castle for a field archery shoot.

During their contest, Elliot notices that Ophelia’s eyes glow when she shoots. Immediately suspicious and angry, Elliot confronts Ophelia about using magic to cheat at the tournament. Alarmed by Elliot’s sudden change in behavior and strange accusations, she insists the party return to the castle, and takes Elliot to be seen by Gaius.

In Gaius’s office, once it’s explained what Elliot saw, the king is brought in and the prophecy surrounding Ophelia and her fate are finally revealed—Ophelia was born with magic and was foretold to be the one who would save mankind from forthcoming destruction at the hand of the Land Vilicus, Pyotr. Ophelia is filled with shock, fear, and anger but doesn’t wallow and begins training with Gaius and Lyla the following day.

Ophelia continues to have strange dreams, but instead of dreams depicting a vicious, giant wolf, Ophelia is met by Ezra, The Great Mage of the past. Ezra guides Ophelia in the use of her abilities and reveals a truth that was never discovered: her purpose is not simply to stop Pyotr, but to steward over mankind as their Vilicus.

In the coming weeks, Ophelia continues her training with Lyla, and she and Elliot grow close and fall in love. Aria is also taken to Balmorea and wed to Prince Marius.

Upon their return from Balmorea, the prophecy foretelling Pyotr’s imminent awakening is given. Ophelia and Lyla set out across the continent to seek out the aid of Mira, The Sea Vilicus. Mira is the only other being who knows anything about Pyotr and they hope she can give insight about Pyotr and help uncover a way to stop him. Meanwhile Maraleon, allied with forces from Balmorea and Nedorra, the kingdom to the north, make preparations to defend against Pyotr once he awakens.

Once Ophelia and Lyla find Mira and she is awakened, the spell sealing Pyotr breaks, and he is released from the mountain, taking up his campaign of destruction against mankind once more.

With Mira’s help, Ophelia and Lyla race back to Maraleon just after Pyotr’s release, but not before he could begin his destructive acts. Ophelia confronts Pyotr, stops him before he destroys mankind, and restores balance and harmony to the Earth.

After the conflict, the three nations establish a tenuous peace, and life seems to return to normal, until one afternoon Aria bursts through the doors of the great hall screaming for Ophelia. Aria is bloodied and bruised, and Ophelia is enraged by her sister’s condition. But it comes to light that Aria isn’t just fleeing danger—the king of Balmorea is plotting against Ophelia, and has sent members of a branch of the Acolytes of Vindicta to kill her.
